A councillor who has done crucial work to tackle slavery and a doctor who has strived to build relations between Chinese and British people while raising numerous cash for charities have been honoured.

Cllr Meenal Sachdev and Dr Peter Wong-Morrow, both from Elstree, received the British Community Honours Award at the House of Lords on Friday.

Cllr Sachdev, who became Hertsmere’s first ever female Indian councillor when she was elected in Borehamwood Hillside, has been passionately campaigning to fight slavery, human trafficking, forced marriage, and female genital mutilation, and is currently director of the Shiva Foundation.

Meanwhile Dr Wong-Morrow, a member for 17 years at Elstree & Borehamwood Rotary Club has also picked up an award.

Dr Wong-Morrow who came to the UK when he nine-years-old from China supports several charities, including the NSPCC, but has also raised vital money for the rotary’s chosen charities too.

Dr Wong-Morrow, who once broke the Hertfordshire county high jump record, has faced his own battles too, having overcome cancer, and he now also spends his time counselling those who are going through similar experiences as him.

The recipients were joined by Hertsmere Borough Council leader, Cllr Morris Bright in London. He paid tribute to his colleague Cllr Sachdev describing her award as “well deserved”.
