More than 250 kids took part in a rugby day to stir up their interest in the sport.

The event was to mark the first ever game played between Barnet Rugby Club and St Bart’s Hospital, which took place 100 years to the day on October 10.

Barnet Elizabethans Rugby club U11 coach Glenn Taylor said the club wanted to engage with primary schools and get them rugby experience.

The day was helped organised by The Barnet Partnership for School Sport which recruited almost all of the participating schools.

Warming up to music and teamed up into sides of seven, children played a day of non-competitive games at the club’s playing fields in Byng Road, Barnet.

He said: “It was a lovely day, the weather was on our side and we started the event with a huge warmup.

“We had the kids dancing to music like Gangnam Style and YMCA. Each team played against four other teams.”

Mr Taylor has been playing rugby at the club since the age of six and both his children compete.

He added: “I started 45 years ago and it was a really good feeling seeing 250 children play rugby enjoying themselves.

“It was in a fantastic spirit, many of the kids had never played rugby before.”

Mr Taylor hopes that the day may have stirred an interest.

He said “We are trying to recruit for the club so if they are interested they can do a try out on a Sunday.

“Hopefully some of the kids will be back to play rugby.”
