Primary schoolchildren from across Hertsmere learnt the international language of football.

Pupils from five schools, including Cowley Hill, Woodlands, and Saffron Green in Borehamwood, Shenley Primary School, and The Wroxham School in Potters Bar, took part in language activities and a football tournament at the Arsenal training ground on September 24.

Almost 60 children, aged nine and 10, from across the borough had a coaching session, conducted partly in French, German and Spanish, to mark International Day of Foreign Languages.

The young people were awarded points for the language work, as well as their football skills.

The day, delivered by Arsenal in the Community coaches, is part of a highly successful community sports partnership between Arsenal Football Club and Hertsmere Borough Council, which has delivered a range of local initiatives, including curriculum football, holiday activities, girls football and a Double Club.

Councillor Caroline Clapper, portfolio holder for leisure, culture and health, said: “This is a fantastic approach that not only encourages young people to get active, but to also learn languages in fun and interesting ways.

“I am delighted so many young people were able to take part.”

The winning team was Cowley Hill, with one pupil winning a football shirt signed by Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech. Ten pupils from Bushey Meads provided mentoring during the session.

The youngsters also had the chance to meet Arsenal Women’s forward Danielle Carter, who attended for a question and answer session.
