A charity match held in the memory of a five-year-old girl who died of a heart defect has raised £10,000.
The event was in remembrance of “bubbly” Shani Berman, from Elstree, who died in February 2017 from a congenital defect. Shani was born with a hole in her heart but she died following a second necessary operation at Great Ormond Street hospital (GOSH).
At Watford Powerleague on Sunday, Shani’s family along with 180 players took part in a rain-swept 12 hour marathon to raise money for GOSH.
It was the idea of Shani’s parents Simon and Juliet as well as their children Joel, 14, and Tammy, 12, who have been fundraising ever since they set up the charity Shine for Shani.
Team Walrus and Team Bear, named after the hospital wards, did not let the weather dampen their spirits Team Walrus fought back to claim an unlikely victory by 260 goals to 249 and the coveted trophy.
A raffle and a bake sale helped towards raising the £10,000 which will go towards supporting research into child heart transplants.
The mouth-watering treats on offer included red velvet cakes, sticky chocolate brownies, and Shani’s favourite sparkle biscuits and helped keep the hundreds of people who turned out to support the event energised.
