A train station could be expanded if plans are given the green light.

An application has been submitted to remodel and extend part of Elstree & Borehamwood station to create a larger and more user-friendly ticket hall with shops.

The applicants, Govia Thameslink Railway, together with Network Rail, believe the plans are necessary as the ticket hall gets “heavily congested” especially during peak hours.

The single-storey extension will increase the internal floor area by approximately 170 square metres.

The extension will also include a larger retail unit and shop, both self-contained.

The development, funded by the Department for Transport, will see better cycle parking creating a secure weather tight shelter for commuters to leave their bikes at the station.

There will also be more toilet facilities.

As part of the plans, only one ticket window will be available, down from two.

According to the application, there will be no impact on the car park or the amount of car parking and cycle spaces.

Access to the station following the development would not change with both vehicle and pedestrian access from the entrance on Station Road.

Subject to being given the go ahead, work is expected to begin in the summer and take around six months.

A temporary ticket office will be provided during the works.

A deadline of May 24 has been given for a decision on the application.
