A man has been airlifted to hospital after he was hit by a car in South Mimms this morning.

The man was walking down St Albans Road, near the junction of Blackhorse Lane, towards Potters Bar after a night out in St Albans when, for reasons unknown at this time, he was struck by a green Fiat at around 5.30am.

The man, in his 30s is in a critical condition and has been taken to St Mary's hospital in Paddington.

The B556 St Albans Road was closed for a number of hours, but re-opened shortly after 11.30am.

The driver of the Fiat Ulysee stopped at the scene and spoke with police officers.

Sergeant Will Hood said: “Sadly, a young man is in hospital with very serious injuries. We are particularly keen to speak to a male motorist who stopped at the scene, but left to go to work.

"We are also appealing for any other motorists who were using the road or saw what happened at 5.35am this morning to come forward so we can establish exactly what happened. This information could be vital to our investigation.”
