A teacher has said goodbye to a school after working for more than 25 years.

Jacqueline Martin began her career working at Hawkesmore School, in Borehamwood, in 1991 as a teaching assistant and later became the special educational need co-ordinator (SENCo).

In 2000 the school closed in order to create Hertswood Academy and Mrs Martin continued to work in special needs and taught maths.

In June 2013 two of the students at Hertswood jumped in front of train. After this Mrs Martin’s role changed and became the child protection officer.

She said: “This was probably the most rewarding aspect of my career.

“Now I have retired, albeit a bit earlier than expected, I look back on my career with great fondness.

“On many occasions I have had opportunities to leave Borehamwood but find that there were two elements that kept me from leaving, the amazing Hertswood staff, who work relentlessly to ensure that all the students reach their true potential and secondly, the families of Borehamwood.

“Their children were my passion and I, along with the whole school team, tried hard to ensure that every child had a voice, were listened to and supported, no matter what their worry might be.

“I and the rest of the wonderful Hertswood family also worked hard to ensure that Hertswood was more than just a school but a safe, warm and encouraging environment.”

Mrs Martin said she has watched the students grow, seen their success and even attended some of their weddings.

She said: “Over the last few years I have found myself teaching a second generation of Hertswood student and loved them too.

“I will cherish my time working in Borehamwood and its families will always have a special place in my heart.

“I would like to thank them for all their kind wishes and online comments and wish Hertswood and the families of Borehamwood all the very best for the future, you are left in good hands.”
