The chairman of Boreham Wood Football Club, Danny Hunter, has quit after being arrested on Friday morning on suspicion of assaulting three women.

The alleged incident occurred at Zinco restaurant, Shenley Road, at about 12am on May 11. Mr Hunter, 44, from Borehamwood, has been bailed until June 5.

In a statement given to this newspaper he announced his resignation as chairman.

He said: "I went to the local restaurant on Thursday evening. I drank too much and was involved in an avoidable altercation. I behaved in a regrettable manner and wish to publicly apologise to all concerned.

"The people involved, the club and my very loyal staff all deserve better from me, and it is only correct that my behaviour should lead to a change in chairman and my immediate resignation."

The new chairman, Bob Nicholson, said: "Danny's resignation was accepted at a hastily arranged board meeting last Friday evening.

"Danny informed us the code of conduct that he vigorously implemented at the club had been broken by himself in an altercation at a local restaurant last Thursday evening.

"He felt he had brought distress to the club, his family and to a party of people with his behaviour."

Mr Hunter has been chairman of the Meadow Park club, in Broughinge Road, for eight years. The facility also plays host to the Arsenal Ladies football team who have recently had a number of successes.

The party of women that were at the restaurant when the alleged incident took place have complained about the reaction of the staff and other customers.

One of the victims of the alleged assault, Shanie Hutton, said: "More should have been done to stop it getting that bad."

She said the other male customers in the restaurant should have stepped in sooner.

"They just stood there and put there hands up," she said. "They didn't try and stop it at all. They only apologised after."

A member of staff at Zinco's said they were unwilling to comment in more detail before speaking to the police, but said: "We tried to do our best."

To date, no charges have been brought but investigations are on going.
