A DriveSafe scheme will be simplified so volunteers can spend more time encouraging drivers caught speeding to slow down.

Hertfordshire’s police and crime commissioner David Lloyd announced the proposed enhancements to the scheme at the DriveSafe Annual Meeting last week, which was attended by lead volunteers from across the county.

The scheme, which allows neighbourhoods to set up a speed monitoring group with the help of police, has grown since its introduction one year ago and there are currently 31 schemes running in the county involving 264 volunteers.

Addressing the group, Mr Lloyd said he wanted to make changes so individual schemes could be set up more quickly and volunteers would be burdened with less administrative work.

Currently, volunteers have to complete vetting checks which can delay the start of a new DriveSafe group, and have to spend time entering data into police computer systems.

However other security measures will be implemented so that these checks are not necessary and it is hoped that the new scheme will be up and running next year.
