Schoolchildren were on fire yesterday as they prepared to do battle in their very own Dragon's Den.

Pupils at Parkside Primary School, in Aycliffe Road, have been honing their enterprise skills over recent weeks in preparation of yesterday’s big event.

The aim was to bid for money for their businesses, in order to help raise enough money to go towards their school trip at the end of the year.

Dragons Mr Starkiss and Mr Taylor, who have both own their own businesses, were highly impressed with the quality of the presentations.

Mr Starkiss said: “It was clear that the children had put a lot of thought into making a viable business that was going to make money. The presentations were excellent and the children appeared very relaxed and comfortable while making their pitches.

“We had no hesitation in investing in their businesses.”

Business propositions included a toast office, a car wash company with a free smoothie while you wait, an alternative cupcake venture and an Adventure club.

The children were involved in looking at all aspects of starting up a business, including analysis, risks and mitigation and how to market their business to the public.

Headteacher Julie Muncey said: “The idea of children linking in their classwork to possible real life scenarios is the inspiration behind the venture. Sometimes it is difficult for children to understand why they have to learn certain things but this helped them to understand why.

“I have been very impressed with the enthusiasm and commitment of all of the groups and am delighted that the dragons have agreed to support the children with their start up businesses.”

Year 6 pupils Harry, Geffen and Mia said: “We really enjoyed designing the logos and getting the money. It was exciting when the money came out in a big case.

“Talking about our business was nerve wracking but amazing at the same time. We just want to start our businesses now.”
