Heavy rain dampened efforts to recycle Christmas in Hertsmere.

Members of the public took 214 trees to be shredded at locations across the borough.

Although this is 21 more than last year, and the highest number since the council started the service seven years ago, the numbers of trees recycled in Borehamwood and Radlett were down by half.

Hertsmere Borough Council blamed the heavy rain, which dampened people’s enthusiasm for recycling at The Venue car park and Newberries car park, which saw 20 trees and 38 trees respectively.

The trees were shredded on site by a special machine and then taken away to be made into mulch, which is used on shrub beds in parks throughout the borough.

Councillor Jean Heywood, who is responsible for the environment, said: “Thanks to everyone who brought their tree along to one of the sessions and are helping us to improve the environment. Your trees will help keep your local park looking lovely.”

Trees can still be recycled at Allum Lane waste recycling centre and Christmas cards can be taken to the Civic Offices car park in Elstree Way.
