Volunteers from an Aldenham-based charity are feeding thousands of people whose lives were devastated by the typhoon that struck the Philippines.
Teams from charity Food for Life, which is run by the International Society of Krishna Consciousness at Bhaktivedanta Manor, are working round the clock to prepare meals for those displaced by typhoon Haiyan.
The volunteers have been cooking and distributing more than 2,000 meals a day to victims in cities such as Tacloban, Palo and Tanauan Leyte since last Monday.
Balaram Das, the emergency relief coordinator for the Food for Life ISKCON programme in the Philippines, said: “We are working almost 24hrs a day. It takes a lot of time to prepare meals under these tough conditions.
“We start cooking as early as 1am and then we leave around 8am for the distribution, before returning as late as 12pm, only to get ready to do it all again for the afternoon shift.”
Some 673,000 people were displaced by the storm, their homes destroyed by the strong winds and floods that devastated the country, and the volunteers are working with other charities to provide as many as they can with hot vegan meals.
The relief effort is funded by the Lotus Trust, which is also based at Bhaktivedanta Manor.
