A glass artist is holding her first solo exhibition this month.

Amanda Charles, 53, from Elstree, is displaying a selection of her contemporary and colourful wall mounted glass sculptures and jewellery at the Radlett Centre in Aldenham Avenue, until August 31.

Amanda began her artwork after raising her four children and then going to study ceramics and glass at the University of Hertfordshire.

Borehamwood Times:

She says: “I have always loved and collected glass and for many years attended classes in glass fusing and silver jewellery making. Studying at university has given me the opportunity to research art movements and to incorporate these influences into my glass art.”

Amanda’s work is influenced by iconic contemporary art movements drawing inspiration from the simplicity of Bauhaus Modernism to the complexity of nonrepresentational Abstract Expressionism. She focuses on the expressive power of colour, intricate detail and pattern to achieve composition and chromatic harmony.

She tells me: “I am intrigued with the versatility of glass, and inspired to create art in an abstract, geometric and linear style often combining and layering transparent, opalescent and dichroic glass to add texture and dimension. I am fascinated by the alchemy of transforming glass by the control of heat to create unique contemporary artefacts.

“I continuously experiment using new methods with the philosophy that I am on an ever-changing learning journey through the majestic medium of glass.”

Amanda’s art is currently being exhibited at various galleries in London and the Home Counties, as well as being held in private collections in the United States and Europe.

This year she is honoured to have been shortlisted for the British Glass Biennale 2017, the UK’s major exhibition of contemporary glass. She will be showing her piece Just A Sliver Please – Chromatic at this event, a milestone in her career.
