Rebecca Adlington was philosophical about the prospect of being part of the 4x200 metres freestyle relay squad at the London Olympics after adding a third event to her programme with victory in the 200m freestyle at the British Gas ASA National Championships in Sheffield on Wednesday night.

The double Olympic champion overhauled Rebecca Turner in the final 25 metres to claim the title in one minute 58.68 seconds at the Ponds Forge event, which doubles as the final Olympic selection meet.

While Turner had already qualified for both the individual event and the relay in the first trials at the Aquatics Centre in March, Adlington's effort earned her a relay spot along with Lucy Ellis, who finished third.

The Nova Centurion swimmer already has the demands of her attempted 400m and 800m freestyle defences and she, along with Caitlin McClatchey, was rested in the heats four years ago when the quartet, who were expected to be medal contenders, failed to reach the final.

Adlington said: "I'd love to be part of that relay but I have got my individual races to concentrate on.

"I think at the Olympics they will probably swim the fastest four in the heats.

"We have no choice if we are to make the final.

"We've made some mistakes in the 4x2 before by swimming different swimmers and resting the good swimmers but I think rightly so we put the fastest four in.

"If they want to include me in the heat then brilliant, if not I think they need to swim the fastest four, so we'll see what their decision is and what they are going to do with that."
