Shenley in seven-wicket triumph

Shenley Village’s impressive batting form of late continued on Saturday, as they beat high-flying County Hall by seven wickets in Saracens Herts Division Three.

County Hall won the toss and elected to bat. With the early wicket of Langton falling for a duck to paceman Wendell Roberts in the opening over, and with a total of just 46 on the board after 20 overs, Shenley were looking well set.

However, left-handed opener Andrew Bartlett proved more difficult to dislodge. He scored 81 before finally falling to an impressive low catch by Richard Evans, again off the bowling of Roberts. The County Hall middle order of Andy Szetiako (62) and Chris Graves (38 not out) helped the visitors to amass a decent total of 228-8. Roberts ended with bowling figures of 6-46 and Jemile Al-Darraji figures of 2-64.

In reply, the home side made a steady start.

With half the available overs used, and with the score at 57-1, Shenley upped the pace considerably.

Opener Morgan Stanley went on to make 60 before being run out and Rob Laney contributed a valuable 33. But it was the arrival at the crease of Roberts and Al-Darraji – batting at 4 and 5 – that really set the game alight. The pair entertained with some big hitting and quick running between the wickets. Roberts hit 6 sixes during his quickfire 73 not out, while Shenley skipper Al-Darraji made a fluent 40 not out.

In the end, they reached their target score of 223 in style and with overs to spare. Fittingly, the match ended with a 6, despatched by Roberts.

Shenley are at home once again this coming Saturday when they will face St Albans II.
