Shenley Village were looking well set for a comfortable victory over bottom club Clifton on Saturday, but were denied when the weather had alternative plans.
In bright sunshine, Shenley won the toss and elected to bat first, making a challenging 289-4 off 42 overs. Anooj Vadgama, top-scoring with 126, and captain Jemile Al-Darraji, hitting a chanceless 104 not out, made a club record partnership of 243.
In reply, Clifton struggled to make inroads on the home total. Wendell Roberts (who ended with figures of 1-8) took the wicket of Davidson for 11 and the Shenley bowling attack kept the visitors well contained. But after 16.2 overs, and with only 32 runs on the board for the loss of one wicket, thunder rumbled around the ground and the heavens opened. After several attempts to re-start the match - only for the rain to fall yet again just as soon as the covers were removed - it was finally abandoned.
With the majority of the Saracens Herts Div Three fixtures also being affected by the stormy weather, Shenley remain in upper mid-table, having gained 11 bonus points. They will be hoping to take their batting form forward to this coming weekend’s encounter with second-placed County Hall.
