Luke Garrard was delighted with the workout his Boreham Wood side picked up as they beat Haringey Borough 2-0 in a pre-season friendly on Tuesday.

Goals from Ricky Shakes and Frank Keita proved to be the difference at Coles Park as the Wood made a winning start to their pre-season schedule.

Having returned from a training camp in Devon, Garrard was pleased to be able to get some much-needed minutes into his players legs.

“The result was not important,” Garrard told the Boreham Wood website.

“It was about getting minutes under the boys belts and I felt that we looked strong, especially after the week that we had in Devon.

“It was all about getting the boys integrated; the likes of Kane Smith and Shaun Jeffers who was a last minute signing today.

“It was good to get everyone involved and overall, it was a very good workout.”

The fixture gave Garrard the chance to blood all six of the players he has signed this summer.

While the Wood boss says it is impossible to make any concrete judgements on new arrivals after one game, he was pleased with what he saw.

“It is so hard to judge on a 45-60 minute spell, but I thought Jeffers was strong, his hold up play was very impressive and he looked neat and tidy around the box,” he said.

“Kane Smith looked energetic, Kieran Murtagh looked energetic, Tom Champion showed an experience and an understanding of this level and Paul Benson and Bradley Ash led the line superbly in the first half.”

Garrard saved special praise for goalscorer Keita on a day when his Wood side were pushed hard by a strong Haringey outfit.

“Frank scored and he has done ever so well in the past season,” he said.

“He plays the system like Frank Lampard and arrives late in the box; the timing of his runs is very good and you saw that with his goal.

“Haringey have some good players, they are all inner-city lads, they all have a bit of quality and they are all athletic.”
