Boreham Wood were left with nothing to show for their efforts at Bromley on Saturday after David Martin's first-half volley was enough to seal the points in South London.

Luke Garrard's men passed up countless chances – and were even handed an opportunity from the penalty spot, which was missed by former Chelsea man Connor Clifford – but could not find a way past a dogged home defence in their 1-0 defeat.

The Wood made a single change from their FA Cup draw with League Two Notts County, the replay of which will be played tonight, with Clifford replacing Kenny Davis after returning to fitness.

Bruno Andrade headed wide from Anthony Jeffrey's cross on the half-hour mark, before the latter had a go himself and drew a smart save from Alan Julian.

Bromley took the lead just before the break against the run of play, and of the half in general. A loose ball was only half cleared by Matt Paine, and was played back into the near post where Martin's smart volley broke the deadlock.

Some superb Angelo Balanta skill looked to have opened up the home defence soon after the break as Morgan Ferrier's sweet volley headed goalwards, but Rob Swaine inadvertently thwarted tue Wood forward when the ball struck him on the line and stayed out.

On the hour mark Garrard's men were given an excellent chance to level up when Swaine clipped Andrade in the box. Clifford stepped up from the spot, but his penalty was at a comfortable height for Julian, who got a strong hand to it.

Joe Devera headed wide from a corner and substitute Jamie Lucas was also off target with time running out, as Wood spurned more chances to equalise – and were ultimately left to rue defeat.

Boreham Wood: Smith, Nunn, Devera, Paine, Ilesanmi, Ricketts, Clifford (Davis), Jeffrey, Balanta, Andrade, Ferrier (Lucas).

Not used: Kuhl, Uchechi, Woodards.
