Luke Garrard says he is close to knowing his starting XI for next weekend when Boreham Wood host Forest Green Rovers in their National League curtain raiser.

Wood completed pre-season with a 4-0 win at National League South side Hemel Hempstead Town on Saturday afternoon thanks to goals from new signing Angelo Balanta, Ricky Shakes, the returning Anthony Jeffrey and Conor Clifford.

For Garrard, who has named the same XI for the last two games, the task is now to work out who will face last season’s beaten play-off finalists at Meadow Park next Saturday.

"I'm close to knowing my starting XI," said Garrard. “We have kept the same XI [for the last two] but Woody (Danny Woodards) coming back from injury has forced my hand slightly and AJ (Anthony Jeffrey) can't play against Forest Green on the first day so that forces my hand – he possesses a lot of quality.

"People are giving me food for thought and Kenny Davis has come to the table in the last two games. Conor Clifford, prior to today, was playing the best football he's played.

"There's competition all over the board which has been very positive. We've got a full week to work on bits and hopefully we have a bright start on Saturday."

Another decision which will have to be made is who captains Boreham Wood this season. Clifford frequently stood in for the departed Callum Reynolds last season but the armband has been shared around in pre-season. New signing Mark Ricketts has led the side in pre-season, as has defender Joe Devera.

"The captain and club captain will be announced this week," confirmed Garrard. "Mark is a leader. Kenny Davis is a leader. Painey (Matt Paine) is a leader. Joe Devera is a leader. We've got people like that across the board whereas last year we didn’t have many leaders in the team.

"Whoever is given the captain's job I expect other people who didn't get the job and maybe feel they deserve it to still come to the table and lead the team and pull the squad together."
