It gets no easier for Boreham Wood in their battle to avoid immediate relegation out of the National League as they visit seventh-placed Wrexham on Saturday.

Luke Garrard’s side are a place clear of the relegation spots but only by virtue of their goal difference which – thanks to their mean defensive record – stands at just minus six goals with 11 games remaining.

When the two sides met for the first time in September it was Connor Jennings who scored the only goal of the game.

A 1-0 defeat sent Wood into the bottom four while lifting the Dragons to third in the National League table – just five points off the summit.

That day Joe Devera made his Wood debut. The ex-Portsmouth player has gone on to form part of one of the sixth-best in the League, conceding just 36 goals.

Since then no side has been able to match the consistency showed by either Cheltenham Town or Forest Green Rovers who have turned the title into a two-horse race.

Former Scunthorpe United youngster Jennings has enjoyed a fine season. Made captain by former Gateshead manager turned Dragons boss Gary Mills, the 24-year-old has netted 12 times this season.

Wrexham are enjoying a fine run at present having gone unbeaten through February, an unbeaten run of six games which earned Jennings the accolade of Player of the Month.

They last tasted defeat at home on January 9 when Woking joined Southport, Macclesfield Town and Eastleigh as the only sides to leave north Wales with maximum points.

That run has left Wrexham seventh in the National League, five points outside the play-off places and with their destiny in their own hands witth ten games of the season remaining.

The same can be said for Wood boss Garrard whose side continue to frustrate sides away from home.

A run of five games unbeaten and without conceding on the road forms part of an away record which is better than their home record. In 16 away matches Wood have conceded just 14 goals – the joint-best record with leaders Cheltenham.

Scoring goal has been the issue for Wood throughout the season. Midfielder Luke Howell is the club’s top scorer with five goals while Bristol Rovers loanee Jamie Lucas, with four goals, is the top scoring striker.

However, the addition of Danny Haynes on loan from Ebbsfleet United, who came through a good debut at Barrow on Tuesday, should help on that front.

Haynes featured for Ipswich Town before moving on to Bristol City, Barnsley and Charlton Athletic. He is seen as a direct replacement for Anthony Jeffrey who has left Wood to join up with his new teammates at Forest Green Rovers.
