It will be third time lucky tomorrow night when Boreham Wood travel to Cumbria to face Barrow AFC for the first time in their history – they won’t have to wait long for a second meeting, though, as the Bluebirds visit on Saturday.

Storm Desmond and then the hosts’ involvement in the FA Trophy put paid to initial attempts to get the game on.

Wood now travel to Holker Street in search of their first back-to-back win this season following Saturday’s 3-0 triumph at Southport – a win which moved them out of the National League relegation zone.

It will be the longest trip the side have to make this season – 550 miles there and back – yet Wood manager Luke Garrard isn’t fazed.

“We are truly a better side away from home at the moment, so much so I am toying with the idea of a pick up at the local Holiday Inn for home matches,” he joked after Saturday’s victory against the Sandgrounders.

Wood haven’t conceded in their last four outings and go into this game in good form having lost just two of their last nine in the National League.

Holker Street is seen as something of a fortress for the Bluebirds who won the Conference North last season by finishing two points ahead of Fylde.

Their home form is formidable, having suffered just four losses in 16 outings on Cumbrian soil this term.

That record was put to the test this month when Barrow hosted the runaway top two, Cheltenham Town and Forest Green Rovers, as well as play-off challengers Gateshead.

The Tynesiders came away with a goalless draw and Cheltenham Town a 2-1 victory. However, goals from Danny Livesey and Jordan Williams in the final 17 minutes ensured Barrow came from two behind to draw with Forest Green.

Goals either side of half time from Kieffer Moore and Keanu Marsh-Brown had Ady Pennock’s side seemingly in control. But the hosts fought back to deny the Stroud side all three points.

However, Barrow’s month gets no easier with the visit of Wood. Garrard’s side are the proud holders of the second meanest defence away from home in the entire division having conceded 14 times in 16 fixtures.

Only leaders Cheltenham Town, looking for an immediate return to the Football League, have conceded fewer goals on the road with 12 shipped in 17 games.

Four points separate the sides, though 17th-placed Barrow have a game in hand. The return fixture takes place just four days later at Meadow Park.
