Boreham Wood make another trip into uncharted territory this Saturday when they visit Sincil Bank, the home of Lincoln City.

The fixture is another reminder of how far Wood have come as they make the journey north to face another former Football League side and another impressive stadium with a capacity of more than 10,000.

Lincoln City was a club long associated with the Football League before they dropped into the Conference at the end of the 2010/11 season along with Stockport County.

It was the fifth time they had slipped out of the top four tiers, however, this is the only time it has taken them more than one season to return.

The Imps’ highest finish in the National League to date was the season before last when they finished in 14th spot. Finishes of 17th, 16th and 15th highlight quite how hard it is to bounce at the first attempt.

Under current boss Chris Moyses they are just a place better off in 13th with ten points to their name, three more than Wood have banked thus far.

That tally is comprise of two wins and four draws from eight matches. They also boast an unbeaten record at home.

Wood’s current run of three matches without victory continued against last season’s beaten Play-Off finalists, Grimsby Town, last weekend. The Mariners ran out 3-1 winners at Meadow Park with Charlie MacDonald scoring his first goal for the club with ten minutes remaining to provide some scant consolation.

However, on the basis Wood’s last win came at much-fancied Tranmere Rovers – themselves currently tenth after suffering their first defeat of the season against Ian Allinson’s men at Prenton Park – there is no doubting the Hertfordshire minnows can mix it with the big boys at the top table of non-league football.

City, under the tutelage of former Moyses – whose only other managerial experience came with Lincoln Moorlands Railway – have freshened up their squad for this season.

Eight of the players given squad numbers between one and 11 are new recruits as Moyses has assembled a side with a wealth of experience in both the Football League and National League.

One new signing to already make his mark on the season is striker Matt Rhead. Signed this summer from Mansfield Town where he spent a less-than-prolific three years, notching 15 in 120 leag the 31-year-old has six for the campaign already.

The former Norton United, Nantwich Town and Congleton Town forward earnt his apprenticeship in the non-league game before winning the 2012/13 edition of the National League with the Stags.

Freed in the summer, Read signed a two-year deal at Sincil Bank this summer and has thrived under Moyses so far.
