Boreham Wood’s second pre-season fixture of the week saw them hold League Two Luton Town to a 1-1 draw on a drizzly Tuesday evening at Meadow Park.

Junior Morias put Wood ahead just after half-time, before trialist Craig Mackail-Smith brought the Hatters level 12 minutes from the end.

Wood's starting line-up included trialist strikers Harry Crawford and Billy Clifford, with Matty Whichelow reverting to a more familiar role on the right wing.

Before kick-off, Luton Town announced their intention to field two teams – one in each half – for this the third game of their pre-season programme.

The visitors dominated the early possession, but the first clear opening fell to Wood. A slip from Mark O'Brien in the sixth minute let in Crawford, whose shot was blocked by Hatters' keeper Elliot Justham. The visiting stopper recovered quickly to also block Whichelow's attempt from the rebound.

Ricky Shakes then found space just outside the Luton 18-yard box, but fired high and wide.

Paddy McCourt's long run down the inside right channel took him into the Wood penalty area, before his pull-back was cleared by Callum Reynolds.

Luton came close to opening the scoring just past the quarter-hour mark. First, Josh McQuoid saw his deflected shot just clear James Russell's crossbar. From the resulting corner, Cameron McGeehan diverted the ball narrowly over.

At the other end, Graeme Montgomery drove just past the post after Crawford had initially been foiled by a defender's challenge.

The visitors were looking for a penalty in the 32nd minute when Mustapha Tiryaki appeared to be pushed in the back by Ben Nunn, but the referee was unimpressed.

Montgomery then sliced wide of Justham's right-hand post when meeting Nunn's deep cross on the volley.

McGeehan, Luton's new signing from Norwich City, brought cheers from the visiting fans when skating past two defenders near the byline, before his cross was cleared.

The Hatters made nine changes at the break, with only Justham and Tiryaki of the starting line-up remaining on the field.

Wood's four substitutions included Morias and an unnamed trialist goalkeeper in place of Russell.

Within three minutes of the restart, Wood were ahead. Morias latched onto a ball which deflected across the box and slotted past Justham by the far post.

Luton regrouped, and a neat one-two on the edge of the box between Tiryaki and Mackail-Smith ended with the former directing a shot just wide.

Morias was unlucky not to extend Wood's lead when his fierce drive from the edge of the box rebounded off the stanchion.

It was Morias who caused more trouble for Luton just past the hour-mark when he sent an ambitious 25-yard effort narrowly over Justham's crossbar.

Wood's trialist keeper was down smartly to Scott Griffiths' shot from a tight angle in the 67th minute. Two minutes later the keeper was in action again when Tiryaki met a Stephen O'Donnell cross first-time.

Devante McKain, on as a half-time substitute for Wood skipper Reynolds, did well to block Isaac Galliford's goal bound drive as the Hatters pressed for an equaliser.

Luton drew level 12 minutes from the end. Mackail-Smith raced onto a ball chipped over the Wood defence before beating the keeper with a cool finish.

As the visitors pressed in the closing stages, Ben Martin deflected O'Donnell's cross out for a corner with two minutes remaining.

But Wood might have snatched a winner in the final minute. Justham used a hand to deflect Morias' lob just outside the penalty area, an offence which would have been a clear red card in a competitive game.

Whichelow drove both the free-kick and the rebound into the Hatters' defensive wall, before the final whistle blew.

Wood’s pre-season programme continues on Sunday with another home fixture against Sky Bet Championship Brentford.
