Borehamwood teenager Eden Davis won a bronze medal in the 100m at the English Schools Championships in Gateshead last weekend.
The 16-year-old finished third after recording a time of 10.79 on Saturday after qualifying through the heats and semi-final.
Davis was seventh in the competition 12 months ago but improved significantly on this and was only narrowly beaten by the runner-up.
The Yavneh College pupil said: "I was just hoping for a podium finish and wanted to improve on last year. It was probably one of my best runs."
His performance has earned him a place on the reserve list for this weekend's International Games in Glasgow.
Davis said: "If I get the chance to go there then that would be a dream come true."
It has been a rapid rise for the youngster in athletics after only taking up running two years ago.
His next target will be the national championships held next month in Bedford.
