Boreham Wood have made versatile former Dagenham & Redbridge man Luke Howell their second signing of the morning.

The 28-year-old joins the National League new-boys after his contract at Victoria Road expired after four years with the east London outfit.

Howell had played in Leyton Orient's first friendly against Braintree Town on Friday as a trialist but has since committed to the Wood.

Boss Ian Allinson enthused: “Luke is a player I’ve liked for a long time but in truth I’ve never been in a position to even contemplate signing someone of his quality.

“Getting promoted has changed that and as such I’ve been chasing Luke for a while.”

He continued: “The chairman has had a lot to do with getting this deal over the line and I think it shows the clubs intent to compete in this division.

“I’m delighted to have got him and as Luke has a young family, it was important that he felt comfortable in the decision he’s made to commit to us. I believe he’s a fantastic addition, he’ll enjoy his football and at just 28 he’s still improving.”

The Sussex-born utility man began his professional career with Gillingham but made just one first-team appearance in the league for the Gills.

Loan spells at Welling United and Folkestone Invicta exposed the 5ft 10in midfielder to regular first-team football, though, and in 2007 he joined MK Dons.

It was with the Dons Howell flourished and he made 67 appearances in all competitions for the Buckinghamshire shire prior to a loan switch to Lincoln City in October 2010.

After a successful temporary stay at Sincil Bank, Howell joined the Imps in January 2011 and remained with the club until August of that year when he made the move to Dagenham.

In four years with the Daggers Howell made 138 first-team appearances and returned 18 goals.

He becomes Wood's second signing of the day after Charlie MacDonald, who joined following his release by Barnet earlier this morning.
