Boreham Wood defender Ben Herd says he feels he has left midway through a journey after agreeing a move to National League South side Hemel Hempstead Town.

The former Watford and Aldershot Town defender has decided to move on because he cannot commit to the extra hours needed at Wood with a young family and the launch of a new football academy business.

He said: “It was a difficult decision but with the extra training and longer away trips I decided I wasn’t able to commit the time.

“I have a new business to concentrate on and also want to spend as much time as I can with my young family so it was more of a logistical decision.”

Herd started the final victory over Whitehawk and believes the players’ team spirit played a major role in their success last season.

He said: “I would say it’s the best bunch of lads I have been a part of and I think the spirit got us over the line.

“You would probably say Whitehawk had the stronger personnel but our team spirit kept us going and won us so many games throughout the season.”

Herd added: “I got quite emotional after the final win and it was just nice to have a joyous moment to share with boys I had got close to.

“It’s a shame because I feel like I’m leaving the lads midway through a journey.

“But I cannot look back and wish the club all the best. Hopefully they can have a good season and stay up next year.”
