Lee Angol’s impressive displays for Boreham Wood have earned him national recognition and the on-loan Luton striker admits it is night and day from where he was 12 months ago.

Angol picked up the Sportsbeat Young Player of the Year gong at The Non-League Paper’s National Game Awards in association with The NLFA, on Wednesday.

The event, held at Fulham’s Craven Cottage, saw the 20-year-old honoured after a sterling campaign in which his 32 goals helped Boreham Wood get promoted to the Conference for the first time in their history.

But just last year, Angol considered quitting football after becoming disillusioned with life at former club Wycombe but credits the Wood for his transformation.

“To win any award is an amazing achievement but to win Young Player of the Year this year is crazy for me,” explained Angol.

“This time last year when I was at Wycombe, I was in a place where I didn’t want to play football anymore.

“I lost interest in the game but to be acknowledged one year on as the Young Player of the Year means a lot to me.

“Towards the end of my time at Wycombe, I went on loan to Boreham Wood for a couple of months and going there was refreshing.

“I started falling back in love with the game, so that’s where it all started and then obviously I went back to Boreham Wood again this year.

“They’ve done a lot for me mentally and physically, so I owe a lot to them.”

Angol has been offered a new contract by parent club Luton but is also weighing up options from other Football League clubs.

That means the marksman may have played his last game for Boreham Wood but is pleased to have left a legacy at the club after scoring in the Conference South play-off final victory over Whitehawk to earn promotion.

“I had to repay them with a strong season after all they did for me – the chairman has been waiting so long for promotion as well, so we had to do it for him,” added Angol.

“We had a good start to the season and around October/November time when we were top of the table, that’s when we started believing we could push on and get promotion.”
