Triumphant Boreham Wood boss Ian Allinson knows he will need to add experience to his squad for the National League but revealed preparations had yet to begin prior to Wood’s play-off final win.

A 2-1 extra-time triumph over Whitehawk on Saturday saw Wood reach the top tier of non-league football for the first time in the club’s history, thanks to strikes from Lee Angol and Junior Morias.

Now Allinson heads into the unknown having never managed higher than the Conference South previously. And it will be a similar scenario for much of his squad, with Ben Herd, Sam Cox and Ricky Shakes among a handful of players at the club who have played as high as the Football League previously.

“We are in a position where we know we can take our stance in the league and then see how it goes,” stated Allinson. “We have always said if we go up we will have to take a look at it because it will be totally new to myself and a lot of the players here.

“We might have to look at bringing three of four players in with more experience but that will only happen over the next few weeks and months as we go into August.”

Asked if he had allowed his mind to wander to the National League and begin preparing for life at a higher level, Allinson replied: “Not at all because you can’t.

“If we were in the Conference South things would be different to the Conference. It is going to be a challenge for us but it is something I will relish, I know the chairman will relish and the players will relish it too.

“By the time we start on August 8, we will be ready for it.”
