Boreham Wood boss Ian Allinson insists there is no pressure on his side to win the Conference South title but believes next month’s showdown with leaders Bromley will determine their destiny.

The Wood were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Whitehawk on Saturday, whilst Bromley were denied all three points by a late Hemel Hempstead Town leveller. With six games to play, Wood trail Bromley by four points having played once more than the Ravens.

Saturday, April 4 looks likely to be the day of destiny for Allinson’s side, who make the trip to Bromley. But the Wood boss is refusing to get too bogged down in the permutation of results as the stakes get higher.

He said: “We will never give up while we have got a chance. We have still got to go to Bromley and they have got tough games to go. They could get injuries, they could get suspensions or the could lose a bit of form. It is down to ourselves. If we keep playing like we are then we will have no problems.

“There is no pressure on us,” he continued. “We will go there (Bromley) as underdogs and will go there full of confidence. The pressure will be on them to beat us knowing if they do that then they will probably win the title.

“You can't rule out Basingstoke, Havant & Waterlooville or Whitehawk either. They will all feel they have a chance. There are 18 points left to play for and that is a real lot of points to play for. Whoever is most consistent will probably win it.”

Wood’s best form this season came between October and mid-December when they strung nine results together without losing. But after that impressive streak they failed to avoid defeat for consecutive league matches again until February.

Now though, Allinson’s men have lost just once in six and he insists the belief they will lift the title remains intact.

“We have got to believe we can catch them,” he stated defiantly. “It is still ours to win.

“I think the players believe it, the staff believe it, the chairman believes it and I believe it. It is not something which has crept up on us. You do not put a pre-season together like we did, where we narrowly lost to quality sides like Arsenal, Watford, Brentford and Luton, without knowing we had something special.

“We knew we had something special then and we have carried that belief ever since,” the former Arsenal midfield added.

Saturday was an opportunity missed for the Wood, who claimed a point late on thanks to a Ricky Shakes goal.

Boreham Wood took the lead in the 20th minute when Darryl McMahon crossed for Junior Morias to grab his eighth of the season.

But despite creating numerous chances, with the division’s top scorer Lee Angol going close on more than once occasion, the Wood were pegged back just after the hour mark by Jake Robinson.

And with 14 minutes to go, Danny Mills side-footed the visitors into the lead for the first time.

Not to be denied, Boreham Wood rallied once more and drew level just three minutes later when Shakes met McMahon’s corner to ensure a share of the spoils.

Reflecting on the draw, Allinson said: “I felt especially in the first half we created three or four chances and on another day we could have got a big scoreline. It was a good performance and it was one of those days where we were the better side for long periods, so it is frustrating to only come away with a point.”

Next up for Wood is a trip to Wealdstone on Saturday and Allinson, along with full-back Ben Nunn, was in attendance at Grosvenor Vale on Monday night to witness Gordon Bartlett’s side take apart Gosport Borough 3-0.

“I was really impressed with them,” Allinson stated. “They are a tough side and even if they do not play that well it is a local derby and there will be a big crowd because they get good crowds.

“We will have to be on our game and we have to make sure we do not lose.”
