Boreham Wood boss Ian Allinson says there is no substitute for points on the board ahead of their return to Conference South action against Basingstoke Town on Saturday.

After two weeks without a game due to their lack of FA Trophy involvement and fixture scheduling, Allinson’s league leaders host fifth-placed Basingstoke on Saturday at Meadow Park.

The enforced two-week break has seen no change at the Conference South summit, with second-place Bromley still five points worse off and with two games in hand on the Wood.

But Allinson insists his side are still in the stronger position: “I think the one thing about all of it, and it has probably been like this for years, is that points on the board are more important than anything.

“You can’t worry about what the others are doing. We have to concentrate on ourselves really.

“If someone goes on a run and goes past us then they will have deserved to win the league, it is as simple as that and I have said that all along. It is in our hands.

“We have worked very hard over two thirds of the season and now we have to work just as hard for the last third of the season to finish the job,” stated Allinson.

And after playing seven league and cup fixtures in less than a month over Christmas and the new year, Allinson (pictured) believes the break has done his squad the power of good.

The former Arsenal midfielder explained: “It has been a good break for us really because we had a couple of little niggles.

“We had Junior Morias, Ben Martin and Ricky Shakes who have all been struggling but we have cleared them all up.

“We had the St Albans City game and the Stevenage Herts Senior Cup match and we put out a strong side for that one because we knew it would be our last game for 18 days or so.

“Even though we have trained hard and have not given anyone any time off, it has been great because I think prior to the break those niggles were stopping one or two playing at 100 per cent.”

Addressing this weekend’s clash with Basingstoke, Allinson stated his belief the pressure is on the Stoke.

He mused: “It is a tough game for both clubs but there is more pressure on them than us because we are on pole already.

“They have got to come and beat us in order to keep their title hopes alive.

“They are a good side and they beat us 2-1 down there earlier in the season in what I thought was a really good, entertaining game where they managed to win in the last minute.”

He added: “We all know at this stage that nothing in this league is easy.”

The Wood have added two new signings in the last fortnight, re-signing former midfielder Daryl McMahon from Conference South rivals Ebbsfleet United and capturing Brentford winger Tyrell Rodney-Miller on loan.

Asked what the duo would add to his squad, Allinson replied: “They give us a little bit extra in terms of midfield cover; they will make our midfield and wide areas that bit stronger.

“Daryl adds that little bit of experience that we are going to need going into the last 14 games. We have not necessarily had that this season and in some ways that is quite good because they do not know what it is all about and they go out and give everything they have got without worrying.”

And even though the Conference South is not affected by the transfer window, Allinson is not ruling out any further additions. “I think if something becomes available which we feel will improve us and is within our budget then we will consider it,” he mused.

“This is probably one of the best squads I have ever had at Boreham Wood. If someone becomes available who will improve us and makes us better than we will consider it.”
