Holders Boreham Wood reached the semi-finals of the Hertfordshire Senior Challenge Cup after a dramatic 5-3 win at Stevenage on Tuesday night.

Lee Angol proved the matchwinner for the visitors after scoring a hat-trick in their quarter-final tie.

Stevenage opened the scoring early on when Joe N’Guessan fired past goalkeeper James Russell.

But Ian Allinson’s side responded impressively and levelled the contest through Angol when he raced past a couple of defenders and calmly beat keeper Sam Beasant.

It took just three minutes for the visitors to take the lead for the first time in the tie.

Angol picked up Matty Whichelow and the winger curled his shot into the corner of the net.

Stevenage were stunned by the response of Wood and it was soon 3-1 when Graeme Montgomery’s cross was superbly volleyed home by Whichelow.

Stevenage pulled one back before the break when Calvin Zola struck the post and Fejiri Okenabirhe followed up to fire into the net.

The hosts made it 3-3 ten minutes into the second half when Okenabirhe scored again.

Stevenage came close to taking the lead but Russell made a crucial save to keep out Zola’s strike.

Just as the visitors were coming under increased pressure, Wood scored their fourth goal to regain the lead.

Montgomery’s corner was flicked home neatly by Angol.

It should have been five from the penalty spot but Angol’s effort was saved by Beasant.

The match was put beyond Stevenage when Angol hit a stunning volley 18 minutes from time to book a home semi-final with St Albans City.

Wood defeated the Saints 2-0 last weekend to extend their lead at the top of the Conference South table.

Goals from Ricky Shakes and Junior Morias fired them to victory at Clarence Park.

Allinson's side's next match is at Farnborough on Saturday, January 24.
