Boreham Wood boss Ian Allinson says his side must be careful to avoid picking up too many draws this season as he felt it cost the club a shot at last season’s play-offs.

The Wood were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Gosport Borough in the Conference South on Saturday but bounced back to winning ways with a 4-0 win over Weston-super-Mare on Monday.

Allinson’s team remain top of the pile after building a six-point lead over Bromley in second place, though the Ravens do have the benefit of two games in hand.

Speaking to the club’s website after Saturday’s draw at Meadow Park, Allinson said: “We need to steer clear of too many draws as that was our downfall last season.

“That said we caused a very good side some real problems today and there are small divides between the top sides I feel. Thankfully we did not lose.”

He added: “I thought they were brighter than us in the first half, but we came out to totally dominate and should have won given the chances we created. We gifted them a goal and hit a lot of shots straight at their keeper.”

Wood suffered no such problems on Monday when they thrashed bottom-of-the-league Weston-super-Mare. Lee Angol scored twice to take his tally to 13 for the season already, making him the division’s top scorer.

The Seagulls’ cause was not helped by their late arrival following bad traffic on the M25, but it did not appear to affect them early on.

Dayle Grubb proved to be a menace for the away side, but Boreham Wood were creating chances with ease and nearly went ahead when Junior Morias connected with a Graeme Montgomery cross, only to be denied by Clayton Fortune.

Angol then tried his luck with a ferocious volley, but Weston-super-Mare goalkeeper Luke Purnell did well to parry the stinging effort away. Ricky Shakes followed in, but his shot was blocked on the line.

Purnell had to be alert once more in pushing Montgomery’s shot over before denying Luke Garrard from the resulting corner.

Wood keeper James Russell also had to be alert, pushing away a cross from Kane Ingram before Jake Mawford could convert from close range.

The breakthrough came with the last action of the first half. A low cross from Matty Whichelow found Montgomery and the former Dagenham & Redbridge winger turned the ball in to open the scoring.

After the break Montgomery added his second when he connected sweetly with Whichelow’s delivery to fizz a volley beyond Purnell at the near post.

Callum Reynolds came agonisingly close to snatching a third when he headed against the post, but Angol was on hand to find the back of the net from point-blank range.

Wood continued to dominate proceedings and when substitute Austin Lipman crossed from the right, Luton Town loanee Angol was in the right place at the right time to turn the ball past Purnell.

Three days earlier it had been an all together different story as Wood came from behind to secure a point at home to Gosport.

Despite a strong start from the hosts, it was the Hampshire side who drew first blood when Tom Dunford netted from close range after 18 minutes.

Just after the hour mark the Wood levelled. Whichelow’s initial effort was not cleared by the Boro and Shakes made no mistake in drilling home the rebound.

Wood felt they were due a penalty at the death when Sam Cox was on the receiving end of a push inside the 18-yard box but referee Mr Da Costa disagreed.

A trip to fellow Conference South side Concord Rangers in the third qualifying round of the FA Trophy awaits Boreham Wood on Saturday.
