Boreham Wood midfielder Sam Cox says the spirit and confidence in the club’s dressing room is unlike anything he has experienced and believes the side can win the Conference South title.

Wood are currently top of the table after 15 games and have established a four-point lead over second-place side Basingstoke Town, although the Dragons do have two games in hand.

Ian Allinson’s side consolidated top spot on Monday evening after collecting six points in the space of three days.

A 2-1 victory on Saturday against Wealdstone came courtesy of a 90th minute winner by Cox. Wood followed that up by then overcoming Maidenhead United by the same scoreline on Monday night.

The 24-year-old, who began his career at Tottenham Hotspur, said: “Things are going very well for us, the spirit and the confidence is the squad is unbelievable.

“I don’t think I have been involved in a dressing room that has been so confident. We’re enjoying being top of the table and even though Basingstoke have two games in hand, you would rather have the points on the board.

“We just have to stay focused and keep going. We are a good side and hopefully we can continue to pick up wins. If we do, that will lead us to the title.”

Wood’s victory over Wealdstone was a dramatic one. They were one goal behind with three minutes remaining but Lee Angol equalised before Cox’s late winner.

“That was a fantastic feeling,” he said. “I know I have to score more goals so I am pleased to have got off the mark.

“I think if I can score five times this season then that would be a good total for me. Ultimately the team is the most important thing.”

Angol and Junior Morais struck against Maidstone and their efforts were enough to clinch victory for Wood on Monday night.

Maidstone had gone ahead but, once again, Allinson’s side mounted a late fight back and both of their goals arrived in the final 15 minutes.

“Playing two games in just over two days is very tough,” Cox said. “It is more mentally difficult rather than physically.

“You have to get yourself prepared properly and know what you want to achieve. We have been able do to that.”

Wood finished 13th in the Conference Premier last season and struggled away from home. They managed just eight away victories during the previous campaign but have already claimed four wins on their travels this term.

Cox believes their improvement is down to the familiarity between the players at the club.

He explained: “In the summer we kept a lot of the players at the club, including myself, so there were not a lot of changes.

“As a group we have been together for a while and that of course helps us. I am really enjoying my football this season and I think that is a case for a lot of the lads.”

In addition to playing for Wood, Cox has a full-time coaching and ambassadorial role at former club Tottenham.

The midfielder coaches the club’s Under-16s once a week and believes it is helping him become a better player.

“I’m loving it back at Spurs, it is a great club,” he said. “Of course it is tough and tiring working there and playing for Boreham Wood but I do not mind.

“And I think working with the younger players at Spurs is helping my game. I am also working with Spurs’ foundation which is nice.

“We do things like go into schools and promote the work the club does to younger people, it is something I really like doing.”
