Borehamwood 2000 Girls Under-10s marked their inaugural season by winning the Spring League Cup on Saturday.

The side are the first girls team in the club’s 14-year history and celebrated their maiden campaign by winning 2-1 against a previously unbeaten Garston Ladies side.

Goals from Courtney Jarvis and top-scorer Layla O’Brien secured the win for Mo Warren's team, who play in the Hertfordshire Girls Football Partnership League Division One and Two.

Despite only being formed at the start of the season, the team have since flourished, winning 17 and losing just three times in 21 league and cup games, scoring 86 goals along the way.

Chairman Bruce Tillcock said: “We had a young lady who was playing for the boys team for two years and when they get to 11 years old, that’s the cut off point. We wanted to make sure she had an opportunity going forward so we set up the team.

“We had a lot of enquiries from parents with girls who wanted to play for us. We’ve just had phenomenal success ever since; we didn’t expect this success in the first season,” added Tillcock.

Borehamwood are a seven-a-side team and for the first three months of the season only had a squad of seven for Warren and his assistant John Byrne to select from.

That number was increased to ten in December and Tillcock paid tribute to the players and coach following a superb first season.

“We’ve got some girls who are very committed and very talented. They try to play in the right way and I believe they are coached in the right way too.

“We won our first game and it went from there really.”

Going forward the future is bright for Borehamwood 2000, who are close to agreeing a partnership with Arsenal Ladies which will see the Gunners help with coaching and coaching badges among other perks.

On June 1, the club will be holding an open trial day in Shenley, with girls between the age of seven and 11 encouraged to come along to try their hand at a range of different activities.
