Boreham Wood ended their three-year wait for a midweek away win in the league after a last-gasp 1-0 victory at Maidenhead United on Tuesday in the Conference South.

Ian Allinson’s side had to wait until the third minute of injury time to snatch the points which eased them clear of the relegation zone. It was a successful week on the road for Wood after also winning 4-1 at strugglers Dorchester Town on Saturday.

Arsenal youngster Zach Fagan joined the club on loan this week and the centre-back made his debut for Wood at Maidenhead.

Fagan signed his first professional contract with the Gunners last year and has featured for their Under-21 side.

The defender slotted into the side on Tuesday with Charlie O’Loughlin unavailable.

Wood created their first opportunity midway through the half when Matty Whichelow fired in a shot which was easily saved by Elvijs Putnins.

Former Watford youngster Whichelow had another chance but his curling effort rose over the home crossbar.

Wood nearly opened the scoring at the start of the second half but Graeme Montgomery’s fierce strike was kept out by an excellent Putnins save.

The visitors kept the pressure on and went close again through Loick Pires’ low strike which was well saved by Putnins.

Sam Cox set up a great opportunity for Kudos Oyenuga but he hesitated when clear on goal and the chance was spurned.

The hosts were denied the breakthrough when James Russell pulled off a superb save to keep out a low strike from Danny Green.

Allinson’s side probably should have done better from a move when Wichelow crossed but Montgomery’s header was too close to the keeper.

Russell produced another stunning save to keep the match level when the shot stopper managed to get a hand to Harry Grant’s strike.

The excellent Russell could not relax, as from the corner, he was forced to push Harry Pritchard’s effort onto the crossbar.

Maidenhead finished the game strongly and wasted another glaring opportunity when Grant fired wide of the target.

The visitors were also looking dangerous and had several chances through Greg Morgan and Montgomery.

It looked as if the match was going to finish goalless but there was a dramatic finish as the visitors stole all three points.

Putnins’ weak clearance fell into the path of Montgomery and he released substitute Junior Morais. He held his nerve to net the winner with just 20 seconds remaining.

The victory, which was their third in four games, has taken Allinson’s side up to 14th in the table which is their highest position since the first month of the season.

The side produced a very impressive performance as they eased to victory at Dorchester last weekend.

Wood made a blistering start to the match which effectively sealed the win.

The visitors opened the scoring after eight minutes when Montgomery fired home from 25 yards.

It was immediately 2-0 when Pires flicked the ball on and Oyenuga poked an effort beyond the home keeper.

The goals continued as Wood extended their lead in the 18th minute when Whichelow struck a 25-yard free-kick into the net.

Oyenuga saw a deflected effort hit the bar in the second period.

Dorchester pulled one back through a Nick Crittenden penalty but Montgomery side-footed home a late fourth for Allinson’s team.

Wood will look to maintain their current form when they travel to Gosport Borough on Saturday before hosting Farnborough on Monday night. Their busy week continues with a trip to Concord Rangers on Thursday evening.

Meanwhile, Arsenal Under-21s are back in action at Boreham Wood FC tomorrow afternoon when they face Reading in the Under-21 Premier League Cup. Entrance to the match, which starts at 3pm, is free.
