Boreham Wood suffer Farnborough setback
3:29pm Thursday 19th September 2013 in Sport
Boreham Wood are third bottom in the Conference South after losing 2-0 at Farborough on Tuesday night.
Ian Allinson’s side picked up a 2-0 home win over Gosport Borough last weekend but were unable to back this up after falling to defeat in their midweek match.
Farnborough had an early opportunity when a poor clearance from Greg Morgan set up a chance for Elvis Hammond but his strike flew wide of the target.
The visitors were punished after 25 minutes when Mark Bentley conceded a free-kick. Scott Donnelly took full advantage as he struck his 30-yard effort into the top corner of the net.
Bentley had a chance to level the game almost immediately but his 18-yard volley rose over the home crossbar.
Wood keeper James Russell needed to be alert to save a deflected effort from Hammond.
The visitors created their best opportunity of the game when Jerome Jibodu released Mario Noto and his cross was volleyed narrowly wide by Graeme Montgomery.
Russell was then forced into three important saves before the break which kept Allinson’s side in the contest.
The hosts should have added a second goal when Daniel Bennett raced through on goal but he sent his effort past the post.
Farnborough remained the more dangerous side and were unlucky to see Tyrone Berry’s strike rebound off the visitors’ crossbar.
Substitute Reece Connolly won the home side a penalty when he was brought down in the area by Russell. Connolly stepped up and found the target to seal a deserved victory.
