Boreham Wood closed the gap at the top of the Conference South after beating joint leaders Salisbury City 1-0 at home last night.

Ian Allinson’s side nearly took the lead in the first half when Cliff Akurang’s shot was parried and Michael Thalassitis’s follow-up effort was blocked on the line by a defender.

Wood keeper James Russell was in excellent form and he denied the league’s top scorer Jamie White before the break.

White had another opportunity to open the scoring in the second half but the striker was put off by the keeper and the Wood defence prevented a goal.

The winner came in the 71st minute when Graeme Montgomery sent in a cross which wasn’t dealt with by keeper Will Puddy and Chez Isaac stabbed the ball home from close range for his first goal of the campaign.

Jamal Lowe made an impressive contribution in the game following his arrival on a one-month loan from League Two strugglers Barnet.

The 18-year-old striker netted 19 goals last season for Barnet’s Under-18 team.

Lowe made his Bees debut back in August as a substitute before getting his first start the following month against Bradford City. He was rewarded with a professional contract in October.

The teenager recently had a loan spell with Hayes & Yeading United scoring three goals in as many appearances.
