A look ahead to Boreham Wood's trip to Northwood in the FA Cup

Mention Boreham Wood and the FA Cup and the club needs to go back a full nine years to have something to cheer about.

Back then the club plied its trade in Ryman League Division One North, the same level at which tomorrow’s opponents, Northwood, currently find themselves, albeit in the Southern league equivalent.

It did not stop Wood helping themselves to a slice of the dream however, when they made it up to Bloomfield Road to meet Blackpool in the first round proper. The day out resulted in a 4-0 defeat but the visitors did not disgrace themselves.

That cup run, like Northwood's this season, started in the preliminary round. Wood overcame Desborough Town, Maldon Town and Burgess Hill Town before beating then Conference South sides Hayes and Kettering Town.

The Woods, not to be mistaken for Wood, have so far beaten Aylesbury United and Chesham United, which must count as a mini upset, before overcoming AFC Dunstable 3-0 in a replay to reach the third qualifying round.

Looking back over at the Meadow Park side’s previous performances in this round, they have only progressed further once in the last eight seasons prior to the Blackpool run. That was in 2010/11 when they overcame Enfield Town 3-1 at home, before a disastrous trip to Ebbsfleet United, where the visitors played out 65 minutes with ten men losing 3-0.

This year ten men did a whole lot better in the previous round, beating St Neot's Town up, which brings us back to Chestnut Avenue to face Northwood for the first time since September 2007, when Boreham Wood ran out 2-0 winners in an FA Cup first round tie.

The Woods have had a mixed season to date, winning two and losing four in the league and crashing out of the FA Trophy 4-0 to Leatherhead.
