Boreham Wood-based Arsenal Ladies welcome back England international

England star Kelly Smith has rejoined Arsenal Ladies.

The 33-year-old has linked up with the Gunners for a third time following the suspension of the Women’s Professional Soccer League in the USA for the 2012 season where she had been playing for Boston Breakers.

International and club team-mate Alex Scott joins Smith in returning to the club and general manager Vic Akers told Arsenal’s website: “Kelly and Alex have both grown up with the club so it feels like they’re coming home now and we’re delighted to be welcoming them back. They are players of exceptional quality and will be a huge boost to the whole squad ahead of the new season.

“For them to return in time for our FA Cup tie on Sunday and next Wednesday’s Champions League match with Gothenburg is a major bonus too. We’re really looking forward to seeing the pair back in action in the season ahead.”

Awarded an MBE in 2008, the Watford-born player has enjoyed a glittering career and her 45 goals in 111 international appearances has helped her make the top five of the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year rankings four times in her career.

Smith last played for the Gunners between 2005 and 2009 when she scored 100 goals in 112 appearances, helping the club to four league titles, three FA Cups and a European crown.

Arsenal Ladies play at Boreham Wood’s Meadow Park and Smith’s first home appearance of her third spell could come on Wednesday when they take on Gothenburg in the Champions League quarter-finals.
