The record books at Shenley Village Cricket Club are to be re-written after it emerged that the club has been around a lot longer than people thought.
After extensive research, team member Dave Stubbs found that the club, instead of having orginally formed in the 1950s, dates back to the mid 1890s.
Stubbs also found that three ex-West Indian test stars previously played for Shenley.
"Exactly what the connection is between these legends and the cricket club remains a mystery," said Shenley player Barry Cashin.
"Due to Stubbs' investigative exploits, Shenley has re-discovered the roots of its chequered past but the jigsaw is by no means complete."
This year promises to be a turning point for the club as it sees promotion to division four, the club's second successive success.
And following on from the tireless efforts of the trustees and countless volunteer workers who have helped turn the site from a developer's tip to the first-class facility it is today, the centre has recently been acquired by the MCC, giving Shenley a much higher profile than before.
*Shenley Village CC are seeking corporate sponsors in order to purchase essential clothing and equipment for the squad's 1998 campaign.
There are many options avilable and companies are urged to register their interest as soon as possible.
