Perfect month for Wood

Boreham Wood have enjoyed a surge of good form of late, and that has now made boss Ian Allinson the Ryman League’s ‘manager of the month’.

Allinson has won the award and with it a big jacket and medallion in recognition of that fact that Wood have the best record in the division.

The team which calls Meadow Park home won all four games in January.

And they capped the month by hitting four goals past Horsham last weekend to keep up their charge towards the summit of the Premier Division.

They stand fourth in the table, level on points with Tooting & Mitcham Utd and three points behind Kingstonian in second.

“There is a very special buzz in the changing room at the moment that you cannot fail to notice,” said Allinson after Saturday's game.

“We trained very hard throughout the three weeks that games were snowed off. Maybe that is giving us the edge over teams at the moment.

“We are playing a system that fits the players we have at present and their overall response to training has been simply outstanding.”

This weekend, Wood go on the road to take on Carshalton Athletic, who currently sit in the lower reaches of mid-table.

A win there will bolster Wood’s promotion push, while the two games they have in hand over their closest rivals in the race could turbo-charge their drive, as the season hits its climax.

Last Saturday, Jamie Richards hit what club insiders claim is the goal of the season.

He finished a slick passing move which started deep inside Wood’s own half. Mario Noto sprayed a 50-yard ball out to Greg Morgan on the wing.

He had the freedom of Meadow Park to advance. Meanwhile, inside the box at the far post was Richards, and he headed the cross past keeper Craig Bradshaw.

Earlier, Noto marked his elevation to the captaincy by opening the scoring from the penalty spot, after Jon Clements was fouled.

The score stayed 2-0 until the 88th minute, when Leon Hunter raced on to Chris Watters’ defence-shredding pass and placed his effort into the net.

Watters got one for himself with a low drive across Bradshaw to wrap things up.

“I thought we tired a little in the second half until Chris (Watters) livened things up, it seemed that we were sitting on the lead a little,” reflected Allinson.

Wood are also in action on Tuesday, when they host Canvey Island.
