Boreham Wood manager Luke Garrard might be putting the finishing touches to his squad ahead of the new season, but he will have to make do without England C goalkeeper Grant Smith who has joined League Two side Lincoln City.

In swapping Meadow Park for Sincil Bank, Smith has teamed up with former Wood teammate Bruno Andrade who confirmed his move to Lincolnshire last month.

Smith, an ever present for the past two seasons, played his final match for the club in last month’s National League play-off final defeat to Tranmere Rovers, as Boreham Wood narrowly missed out on promotion to the Football League.

The 24-year-old was originally signed two years ago after a successful trial, having played for Bognor Regis Town in the Isthmian Premier Division in 2015/16, and went on to play over 100 games for the club. Smith had begun his career at Fulham and had a spell as a scholar at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Now he will have an opportunity to progress his career with a Lincoln side who made the League Two play-offs last season before a semi-final defeat to Exeter City.

And with the departures of goalkeepers Ryan Allsop and Paul Farman this summer, Smith will fancy his chances of cementing a starting berth for Danny Cowley’s side as he enters a competition with former Arsenal youngster Josh Vickers for the vacant number one shirt.

"He has a fantastic attitude and has a real desire to improve and get better and he’s going to make it a really good fight for the number one spot,” Cowley told the Lincoln club website.
