Boreham Wood’s struggles in the National League showed little sign of slowing as their winless run reached five games on Tuesday night.

A slow start from Wood undermined any hopes of them taking a positive result from the clash with Tranmere.

They were a goal down inside the first minute after across from the left picked out Andy Cook.

Having outmuscled his marker, the Tranmere man clinically fired beyond Grant Smith to put Wood firmly on the back foot.

The early error was compounded with less than a quarter-of-an-hour on the clock when Wood failed to clear a corner.

Again it was Cook who applied the finishing touch, reacting well to fire home powerfully.

Ben Toillett almost made it three after cutting in from the right and firing just wide.

Such was Tranmere’s level of control, Wood rarely troubled their goal in the opening period and only threatened in the closing stages.

When they did break through they found Scott Davies in fine form in the Tranmere goal.

The home side’s number one made an excellent stop at full stretch to deny Frank Keita and Ricky Shakes could only turn the rebound wide.

An improved second half display from Luke Garrard’s side saw them restrict Tranmere as they continued to search for a route back into the game.

They would have felt aggrieved not to be awarded a penalty when Matt Paine was upended in the box after playing a neat one-two.

Tranmere twice went close to killing the game off, but failed to convert presentable one-on-one chances .

Having rode their luck, Wood made it a nervy final five minutes for Tranmere after Angelo Balanta met BrunoAndrade’s whipped delivery to score.

The goal proved to be a mere consolation, however, as Wood’s hopes of taking anything from the game went begging with the failure to convert a late corner.
