The 68-year wait goes on for Boreham Wood to beat a professional club in a competitive game, but they will try again after Notts County battled back from 2-0 down to secure a replay in the FA Cup first round.

It was a wet and windy afternoon at Meadow Park and Wood gaffer Luke Garrard will be disappointed his side didn’t progress at the first time of asking, but won’t be disappointed with his side’s performance.

Garrard made two changes from the side that beat Woking last Saturday, starting the fit again Morgan Ferrier and recalling Joe Devera to the starting XI. Danny Woodards and Conor Clifford dropped to the bench.

Wood started the game the brightest and were on the front foot from the outset, setting the tone for the afternoon.

Ferrier won a free-kick which Bruno Andrade took. The in-swinging delivery was only half cleared into the path of Mark Ricketts who volleyed over.

Following a driving run from Femi Ilesanmi down the left, the powerful left-back was fouled right on the edge of the area. Angelo Balanta’s resulting free-kick cannoned off the wall.

Wood then took the lead and deservedly so. A great interchange between Kenny Davis and Balanta saw the former setting Ferrier free and he fired first time past the on-rushing Adam Collin.

Grant Smith, who had been a spectator for the first 30 minutes of the game, had to be alert and got down well to his left to keep out a powerful strike from just outside the box.

But Wood were soon back on the front foot when Jeffrey used his pace to slip the ball through for Ilesanmi on the overlap. The left-back played a ball into the box which was just too deep for Davis to get his effort on target.

Wood came out the blocks in the second period determined to add to their half-time lead and got their just rewards when Andrade and Ben Nunn combined will down the right. Andrade played the ball into the feet of Balanta who took a touch before firing past Collin.

Garrard instructed his side to keep it tight and compact but out of nowhere Adam Campbell had a speculative shot which took a couple of deflections before beating Smith.

Even at 2-1, Wood looked the more comfortable side and should have put the game to bed. A Notts County corner was well cleared and the counter was on. Balanta ran 60 yards with the all and the Wood had four attackers to just two County defenders. Balanta had the chance but scuffed his effort wide.

Notts County were knocking on the door as the minutes ticked down. A corner was won down the right and a ball into the box which travelled to the back post found Campbell to tap home from two yards to give the visitors what looked to be an unlikely draw.

More drama was to follow though as the visitors had thought they had snatched the win in added time. A ball fizzed into the box from wide left found Vadine Oliver. His mishit effort made its way to a County attacker who put the ball past Smith but to the relief of the home fans he strayed into an offside position.

Wood live to fight another day with the replay at Notts County on Tuesday, November 15.
