Luke Garrard declared himself baffled at the decision not to award his side a penalty as Boreham Wood drew 1-1 at York City thanks to Ricky Shakes' late equaliser.

Shakes crashed home in the 90th minute to stretch Wood's unbeaten run to three games, 60 seconds after Simon Heslop had lashed in an opener for the Minstermen which looked set to win the game for the hosts.

Wood ought to have had the chance to go in front after 67 minutes when substitute Morgan Ferrier rounded York keeper Scott Flinders after latching onto defender Jack Higgins' loose backpass.

But referee Peter Wright saw it differently and booked the forward for simulation - a decision Garrard was less than impressed by.

"It was 100 per cent a penalty," said the Wood boss. "I look at reactions and body language. Simon Heslop and Clovis Kamdjo turned away knowing the referee would blow the whistle and point to the penalty spot.

"In the crowd there wasn't any anger towards the whistle initially. And yet I've got a striker who's gone through on goal one-v-one against the goalkepeer, taken it to the left-hand side of him, opened the whole goal up for a tap-in, gets contact and, quite rightly, goes down to earn a penalty. So I'm a little bit baffled by the decision."

Despite being unimpressed by the decision not to award his side a penalty, Garrard felt the result was a fair one after both sides struggled to create clear-cut chances.

"100 per cent it was a fair result," he said. "I didn't think either side really worked hard enough on the ball to warrant a win.

"The game was very much a stalemate. Then you look at their set piece on the 89th minute of the game - we've worked on it all week as it's their strength - and they get a really good goal from Heslop.

"In a game like that where neither side has really opened the other up a piece of quality is going to win the game. I'm grateful Shakesy has come to the party at the end and matched Heslop with an unbelievable effort to equalise."

Garrard praised his side's character after they came from behind for the second time in a week while admitting that he thought Heslop's strike had beaten his side.

"On Tuesday night we went 1-0 down and showed the character to win 4-1 [at Dover]," said Garrard. "We went 1-0 down here in the 89th minute and their fans were behind them - a massive rapture went up after their goal - and I thought we were dead and buried.

"In fairness to the players they dug deep and got the equaliser."
