Luke Garrard felt Saturday's win over Forest Green Rovers was to blame for Boreham Wood's slow start at Dover Athletic on Tuesday evening but praised his side's second-half display as they ran out 4-1 winners.

Ricky Miller proved to be the protagonist in a game of two halves, putting the Whites ahead from the penalty spot after 22 minutes. His next contribution was to earn a red card for collecting a second booking four minutes into the second half.

That changed the face of the game and Wood soon drew level when Kenny Davis tucked home an equaliser from the penalty spot. Soon after, Bruno Andrade finished from close range before Angelo Balanta added a third. And Andrade completed the rout with his second late on to seal a memorable away win.

Speaking afterwards, Garrard admitted the 1-0 win over promotion favourites Forest Green on Saturday had a knock-on effect at The Crabble.

He said: "Saturday's game took a lot out of the boys and was very much to do with the slow start today. But then you look at the fitness levels and reactions and we looked strong.

"Yes they had ten men but I looked at their body language walking off the pitch and I looked at ours and we looked fit and strong."

The cliche goes that it can be harder to play against a side with a numerical disadvantage as they close ranks and make it difficult for their opponents to play. But Wood showed no mercy with Dover down to ten and scored three times in nine minutes to complete a stunning turnaround.

"Sometimes it's harder to play against ten men," admitted Garrard. "They lock in, get themselves organised and play against two banks of four and defend their 18-yard box.

"But with our width and the people we brought off the bench we were able to keep the pitch big and open up little supply lines. The game was very open towards the end and we capitalised on that.

"It was massively important to get the goal after they went down to ten men because then it gives you an opportunity to get a second, hopefully a third and then the fourth.

"The longer they hold on they get a little bit more strength and togetherness. It was a good time to get the first goal."

On Saturday Wood were guilt of not making the most of their chances against FGR. But there was no danger of repeating that tonight as the Meadow Park outfit made it five straight wins - a run which started at the end of last season.

"I felt we very clinical and a lot of what we did a lot of we've been working on in training with getting the ball wide and into good areas," said Garrard. "That was very apparent today and it was good to get those goals on the board."
