Boreham Wood have completed their third summer signing with Braintree Town defender Matt Paine joining the National League side.

Paine, who can also play in centre-midfield, joins Wood following a successful season at Braintree, where he was an important member of the squad that finished third in the National League.

The Essex side's season was to end in disappointment, despite achieving their best finish, as they were beaten 2-1 by Grimsby Town in the play-off semi-final to miss out on a trip to Wembley and a shot at promotion to League Two.

The former Colchester United trainee has made over 175 appearances for Braintree in six years with the National League side.

Boreham Wood manager Luke Garrard has spoken of his delight at the capture of Paine and admitted that the former Braintree man was a player he had targeted for some time.

Speaking to the club’s website, Garrard said: “I’m delighted to have secured Matt’s signature and his experience, ability and versatility will serve us well. It’s a signature that I’ve targeted since the season came to an end and I’m again very grateful to our chairman for backing me on this.

“Though we did have a talented squad last season, I always felt we needed one or two additional leaders to help get us over the line in certain games. In Painey, Kenny Davis, who we signed a few weeks ago and with the likes of Joe Devera, Dave Stephens, Danny Woodards, Ben Nunn and Conor Clifford, that problem will now solve itself.”

As well as the signing of Paine, Boreham Wood have announced that Junior Morias, Jordan Chedozie and Billy Clifford have rejected re-engagement terms from the club.

They are now free to speak to any team that is interested in their services.

Wood have stated they will be seeking compensation should they sign for another club, due to their age.

Former defender Josh Hill has moved to rivals St Albans Town, where he will link up with the club’s former manager Ian Allinson.

Hill was released last month having spent time on loan at Hemel Hempstead Town and Havant and Waterlooville over the course of the 2015/16 season.
