Boreham Wood will ensure National League survival if they win at bottom club Welling United on Saturday.

Back-to-back wins against Aldershot Town and Guiseley have left Wood the masters of their own destiny and put them within touching distance of safety, and they know that if they beat Welling they won’t be joining their hosts in the Vanarama League South next season.

Luke Garrard’s side could even survive with a draw or a defeat, if other results go their way, but they don’t want to be relying on crossed fingers and will be heading to Welling looking to take care of their own business in a dramatic final day.

Chairman Danny Hunter said: “We’ve got a massive game down at Welling. Nothing’s done, nothing’s over. It can all fall flat next Saturday. If we think it is done, we will get done.”

Hunter added: “When you are in relegation battle it’s not about performances, it’s about wins. It’s about doing what you need to do.”

And he called on the town to travel to Welling in their numbers to cheer the team over the line and trigger a party to remember.

In a direct message to supporters, via Boreham Wood TV on the club’s website, he said: “Find a way to get there. We have got to get everyone out there.

“Boreham Wood has got to turn out, it’s got to travel. We’ve got to get ourselves down there and finish the job.”

They might have thought the job was done last week when they came off the pitch having beaten Guiseley 1-0, to drop them into the relegation zone, with Delano Sam-Yorke scoring the only goal.

But when they got back to their dressing room they discovered that relegation rivals Halifax had pulled off an unlikely win at second placed Forest Green, meaning Wood have to go again and get one more win to be sure.

Hunter said: “Halifax, Guiseley, us, Altrincham – it’s going to be nervy but of those four we are in the box seat.”

Wood go into the match – which has been described as the biggest in their history – sitting two places above the drop zone and they have a significantly better goal difference than any of the teams beneath them.

That goals column puts them ahead of Halifax – with whom they sit level on 47 points – and they are one point clear of Guiseley and three clear of Altrincham heading into the final day.

Kidderminster and Welling have already been relegated.
