Boreham Wood manager Luke Garrard believes their home game against bottom side Torquay will be even tougher than their last matches against promotion challengers Grimsby Town and Braintree.

Wood claimed a goalless draw at Grimsby on Saturday before a superb 2-0 win at Braintree on Tuesday night helped them climb out of the National League relegation zone.

But Garrard thinks there will be more pressure on his team heading into Saturday's game with their fellow strugglers.

The Wood boss said: “I think it will be a tougher game because we’re both fighting for our lives and it will bring a different pressure.

“But I feel that if we can play to our maximum then that will give us a good opportunity to win.”

Garrard, whose side are two points above the relegation zone, continued: “Torquay is the main focus and we have to try to build on the last week. If we can do that then we it will give us the chance to move up the table.

“The boys have to draw on the last two results because it is still so tight down there.”

Wood gained a crucial win on Tuesday at Braintree. The visitors opened the scoring three minutes after half-time when Scott Doe profited from a set piece.

Garrard’s side extended their lead six minutes later with a superb long-range strike from midfielder Luke Howell.

A miserable evening for the hosts was rounded off after a late second yellow card for defender Matt Paine.

The Wood manager, whose side have taken four points since losing to then bottom side Kidderminster Harriers, said: “We went there, stuck to our game plan and got a result.

“In terms of the response I was looking for it was huge and it’s one of the biggest results since I’ve been in charge.”

He added: “It was our tenth clean sheet and we have the joint fifth best defensive record which is a great record for a team fifth from bottom.”

Director of football Ian Allinson left the club at the end of the last week after taking charge at St Albans City.

Allinson managed Wood to promotion last season and Garrard believes he can succeed at the Saints.

Garrard said: “I have a great relationship with Ian and talk to him a lot. I wish him all the best and believe he will give it everything to try and keep St Albans in the league.”
