Boreham Wood will be aiming to end a run of three straight National League defeats when they travel to Prenton Park on Saturday to face an unbeaten Tranmere Rovers side looking to bounce straight back to the Football League at the first attempt.

Ian Allinson’s men face the daunting prospect of facing a side who were two divisions above them last season in League Two.

After the Wood got off to the perfect start on the opening day, with a 3-1 victory over FC Halifax Town, three consecutive defeats have followed against Eastleigh, Gateshead and Forest Green Rovers.

Wood manager Allinson acknowledged his side must learn from their mistakes following a 1-0 loss at home to Forest Green on Tuesday.

He said: “We can certainly take the positives tonight, we will learn from our mistakes and for sure we were made to work extremely hard.”

Rovers, on the other hand, are displaying exactly the kind of form required to seal an immediate return to the Football League having picked up three wins from four matches to leave them two points off the summit and just behind Forest Green.

Tranmere manager Gary Brabin, who has experience in the National League as manager of Cambridge United, Luton Town and Southport, is wary of the threat that Boreham Wood will pose to his side.

“Boreham Wood will come here with nothing to lose, no expectation on them and, again, it'll be a case of us turning up and doing what we know we're capable of," he admitted.

"It's going to be tough, it's a tough league. There are no easy teams in this division. They'll be full of confidence from a promotion-winning season, so they'll have a winning mentality and I'm sure they'll be a difficult opponent for us.”

Tranmere find themselves in the National League after suffering back-to-back relegations - a slide which started when manager Ronnie Moore was sacked for breaking the Football Association's betting rules.

The Merseyside outfit were duly relegated into League Two and neither Rob Edwards nor Micky Adams could keep Rovers in League Two last year as they slipped out of the Football League.
